Syria, Politics, 1/16/2002

A group of independent Syrian lawyers has announced the formation of what they called the national committee for defending " detainees of the opinion," with Damascus as a headquarters, stressed that this commission is not in contradiction with the Syrian laws, noting that this movement does not adopt a political attitude.

A statement adopted by the group composed of 50 lawyers said that the committee will work for the " Superiority of the law and its efforts concentrate on ensuing just legal trials for citizens who might be arrested for reasons relating to their political ideals and positions."

The statement said that the committee will hold a constituent conference within three months in Damascus, its main headquarters.
