Jordan gives up the building of al-Wahda dam project
Jordan-Syria, Economics, 1/15/2002

The London- based al-Sharq al-Awsat daily said in its Monday's issue that the Jordanian government has given up the idea of building al-Wahda dam on the Syrian- Jordanian borders.

The Jordanian government has denied its decision to have resulted from the Israeli pressure to force Jordan to pullout from the project.

High ranking sources at the Jordanian ministry of waters and irrigation said that the ministry decided to re-study the economic feasibility of al-Wahda dam project and stressed that there is no link to Israel in this matter.

Jordan, however, had agreed with Syria to build al-Wahda dam on al-Yarmouk river according to which Syria will invest the resulting electrical power.
