Bush: Washington to help Egypt overcome September 11 repercussion
Egypt-USA, Politics, 1/12/2002

Within the framework of President Hosni Mubarak's contacts with world leaders to resume Mideast peace talks, he received phone call form US President George W. Bush. The two Presidents tackled the latest developments in the Palestinian-Israeli peace efforts and the results of US peace envoy, Anthony Zinnits visit to the region.

During the telephone conversation, the two leaders discussed the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories

They underscored the need to exert further efforts to ease tension between the Palestinian and Israeli sides and to have them return to the negotiations table.

A stress was laid on Bush's measures to help Egypt face to the economic repercussion of the September 11 terror attack on the US.

President Bush expressed appreciation for Egypt â??s anti terror efforts and its endeavours to establish peace in the Middle East.

Spokesman Ari Fleischer added that the two leaders have agreed to pursue their efforts to forge peace in the Middle East and pledged to closely cooperate in eliminating terrorism.

He added that during the conversation Bush planned to go ahead with a mission undertaken by American envoy Anthony Zinn to help Palestinians and Israelis reach a cease-fire and implement the Mitchell report and the Tenet Blueprint.

Fleischer quoted Bush as expressing deep concern over arms shipment which Israel alleged to have seized before being smuggled into the Palestinian self-rule areas.

The official said that Mubarak and Bush had expressed satisfaction with a recent decision by the American administration to expedite economic assistance to help Egypt overcome the economic effects of the September attacks on the US.

The Mubarak-Bush conversation generally focused on the Middle East and the anti-terror drive, said Fleischer.
