Mubarak reviews with the cabinet means of upping exports

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Thursday held an expanded cabinet meeting at the republican palace in Heliopolis.
The meeting fell within a continued efforts exerted by President Mubarak to follow-up the government's performance and execution of programs and projects with the aim of upping exports.
Minister of Information Safwat Al-Sherif said the meeting falls within the context President Mubarak decisions at a cabinet meeting last November pertaining to discussing all the state sectors with the ministers concerned and the future plans of these ministries.
President Mubarak started with the communications and information technology sector as Minister Ahmad Nazif reviewed all the projects carried out in accordance with the plans submitted to President Mubarak with the beginning of 2001, he said.
The President reviewed a project to provide the Internet service gratis without subscription and at the local call rate within a pioneering experiment in the region, he said, adding this service will start with Cairo as of mid-January and will be generalized in the rest of governorates next near.
He also discussed another project to upgrade the technological infrastructure and services of the network, to which LE 4 billion in annual investments were appropriated for five years' time, in addition to a project to set up a home wireless telephone network and establishment of an export oriented local wireless phone industry in association with Telecom Egypt and the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI).
Feasibility studies of the project indicated that it would provide $ 450 million in foreign exchange, he added.
According to Sherif President Mubarak called for locally producing 25,000 computers and supplying the schools with 100,000 computers a year.
Mubarak also called for swiftly -sending communications draft law to the People's Assembly after being discussed by the cabinet.
