Moroccan association undertakes information campaign with Swiss ngos
Morocco-Switzerland, Local, 1/12/2002
The Moroccan Sahara association has been holding this week a series of meeting with Swiss non-governmental organizations and the International Committee of the Red Cross over the plight and the alarming situation of Moroccan soldiers and civilians held in the separatist Polisario's prisons in Algerian territory.
The visit to Switzerland is part of an international campaign by the non-governmental association to raise awareness of the international community over the dire situation of these detainees, some of which have been in jail for more than two decades.
The delegation supports its statements with photos and descriptions of the decaying health, psychological distress and inhumane detention conditions of these prisoners.
The association met with the World Organization against Torture and the ICRC's official in charge of the Middle East-North Africa department. The ICRC has repeatedly renewed the importance and the priority it grants to liberating Moroccans detained in the Tindouf camps. Other meetings are scheduled with the Swiss Human Rights League, and other human rights and non-governmental organizations, including the Swiss section of Amnesty International.
The association is conducting an international campaign in Spain, Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Austria, Canada, the USA, Qatar and Kuwait, to make pressure on the Algerian government to obtain their liberation the soonest and without conditions.
