US congress delegation meets wali of Marrakesh region
Morocco-USA, Politics, 1/12/2002

A US congress delegation, currently on a visit to Morocco, met on Friday the wali (senior governor) of the central region of Marrakesh-Tensif-Al Haouz, Mohamed Hassad.

The Moroccan official briefed the US congress delegation, led by leader of the Democrat party in the U.S. House of Representatives, Richard Gephardt, on the region's assets, the management of local affairs and prerogatives of the town councils and of the urban community.

He noted that the problem of water resources has a crucial importance for the region, given demographic growth and the scarcity of this resource.

The wali also added that the region which receives over one million tourists annually will see the number of its visitors doubled thanks to several major projects underway.

The US delegation, comprising Ray LaHood, Ciro Rodriguez, Henry Waxman and Leonard Boswell, was received on Thursday by King Mohammed VI.

Gephardt had said following his meeting with the sovereign "America is deeply appreciative of the support and help it received of Morocco since Sep. 11th" and " deeply appreciates the king and the people of Morocco's sympathizing and understanding the tragedy that happened in America on September 11th."

Morocco is one of the first countries to have recognized the USA as an independent country over 250 years ago and the two countries have had a close and important relationship ever since, said Gephardt who is the minority leader at the House of Representatives before expressing hope that the "US will be a constructive partner with Morocco and its people to bring about further economic investments and development."
