Arab League denies making contacts to transfer the place of the summit
Regional, Politics, 1/12/2002
The Arab League (AL) assistant secretary general for political affairs Muhammad Zakaraya Ismael has denied any contacts made by the AL chief Amr Moussa to transfer the place of the forthcoming Arab summit, in line with a Libyan request, at a time when the Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri stressed that the summit will be held in its due time in Beirut.
Ismael said that such news are categorically incorrect and that the decision taken to convene the summit in Beirut was taken by the Arab summit and can be only changed by the summit itself.
Ismael added that the Arab states which supported the convening of the summit in Beirut represented the majority in the context of the response towards the recently evoked controversy. He added " Things has turned to be calm and Libya will by the ultimately end take part at the Presidential level and col. Al-Qaddafi will take part, himself in the summit."
He added that the Beirut's forthcoming summit is very important because what is taking place now in Palestine is unreasonable and there should be measures that the Arab leaders will deal with in their forthcoming summit." Worthy mentioning that demands made by certain Shiite sides in Lebanon in not to receive the Libyan leader Mu'ammar al-Qaddafi has raised an Arab crisis and the Lebanese Shiite Amal movement and its leader Nabih Berri considered al-Qaddafi responsible for the disappearance of Imam Mousa al-Sader. In response, Libya called for transferring the place of the summit to Cairo in its capacity as a headquarters for the AL.
