ISESCO's colloquy on Muslim world image in western media closes
Regional, Religion, 1/11/2002
The international colloquy on "The Muslim World Image in Western Media: between Fairness and Bias" held by the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) in Rabat this January 9-10 wound up with a call to western media to respect journalism ethics.
Western media who are attacking the Islamic world are called to refrain from their partiality and abide by the rules of information profession, said participants in the conference.
The closing statement which underscored the Arab-Islamic civilization contributions to other world civilizations, recall that Islam is based on the values of justice and tolerance and described as "unfair" the campaign that tarnishes the image of Islam and misleads public opinion. Participants also warn that the biased news reports ignites racist tendencies and resentment between peoples and risks to destabilize societies and threaten world peace and security.
The colloquy also concluded that correcting the image of the Muslim world in western media should be conducted as part of inter-civilization dialogue that the ISESCO undertakes to promote to support efforts by the United Nations Organization to consecrate tolerance and co-existence and consolidate a culture of peace based on justice, fairness and mutual respect.
The statement further calls for the creation of an international media body to probe inter-civilization dialogue and peaceful existence and contribute to settling contemporary problems.
The conference brought together intellectuals and media professionals from Arab, Islamic and Western countries (USA, Britain and France). Discussions focused on the way western media view Islamic religion and civilization, the issue of neutrality in media reports and how political stances impact information wording.
