Al-Shara discusses with Larsen conditions in the ME region

The Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara on Thursday received the ME peace process special coordinator Terry Rod Larsen and members of the accompanying delegation.

Discussions dealt with conditions in the region.

In this respect, al-Shara reiterated the role that should be played by the UN in putting an end to the aggressive policy pursued by Israel against the Palestinian people in the occupied territories and to force Israel to abide by UN resolutions concerned.

Larsen stressed that there is today an international consensus that any solution to the grave conditions in the Middle East should be built on the UN security council resolutions 242 and 338, ending the occupation and establishing the Palestinian states and that the bridge to negotiations should be built on economic and political bases that will be conducive to the realization of security for all because security will not be attainable without dealing the political condition on the ground of international legitimacy resolutions and the land for peace formula.

Al-Shara also received the director of the Middle East and north Africa department at the French foreign ministry and members of the accompanying delegation.

The two sides reviewed regional and international developments and the importance of the European role in the region and bilateral relations between Syria and France.

Larsen stressed in a statement to the Egyptian TV that peace is not attainable in the Middle East without the establishment of an independent Palestinian state according to UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338.

Larsen held Israel responsible for the deteriorated conditions in the Palestinian, noting that the international community as a whole has started to realize that all taking place currently of the Israeli practices is behind the deterioration.
