Maareve issues a new Arab daily in Israel
Israel-Palestine, Culture, 1/11/2002

The first issue of a new Arab-language daily in Israel was issued on Thursday in Israel. It is addressed to the " Palestinians " of the 1948 territories.

The paper is issued by " Maareve" foundation, the second largest press foundation in Israel and will be distributed in all Arab cities and villages in Israel, together with the Israeli Hebrew- language Maareve. The paper's chief editor is the Palestinian poet Salem Jubran ( from al-Nasera ) who was an editor for al-Itihad in 1990-1991.

Jubran said that the new " al- Ahali" paper is a project for a new daily for the Arabs in Israel and it will for the time being issued twice per week ( Sunday, Thursday).

Worthy mentioning that there are 20 papers issued in Arabic in Israel, mainly the " al-Itihad " daily issued by the Communist party, which is now the only daily in Arab language and al- Sannarah which used to be published twice a week and then converted to Kul al-Arab ( all the Arabs) weekly. The two papers are commercials. There is also " Fasl al-Maqal " weekly issued by the national coalition party ( Azmi Beshara ) and the " Sawt al-Haq and al-Hurriyah" ( voice of the right and freedom) issued by the Islamic movement.

Poet Salem Jubran said that one of his conditions to contract with "Maareve" is to run the new paper with ultimate liberty without any intervention in its policy by any side. He said that his national thinking and attitude will be dominant in the said paper.
