Al-Assad stresses to the Italian parliamentary delegation Syria's commitment to ME peace

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday at the Damascus al-Shaab palace received Choustav Silva, chairman of the foreign relations committee at the Italian parliament and members of the accompanying delegation, which represents various Italian parties represented at the parliament.

The meeting was attended by the chairman of the People's Assembly Arab and foreign affairs committee Shaker As'eed and the Italian ambassador in Damascus.

Discussions dealt with "developments in the region in light of Israel's commitment to its aggressive policy against the Arabs and Syria's commitment to UN resolutions and the UN Security Council and the Madrid's conference and the land for peace formula."

Discussions also dealt with international conditions as a result of incidents that took place in the US on September 11, 2001.

Al-Assad noted the importance of an effective European role in solving the conflict in the region. He stressed Syria's commitment to the peace process regardless to persons who assume authorities in Israel, whether they want peace or stand against it as the situation now.

Then the president answered questions put by members of the Italian parliament on regional issues that are still suspended without a solution.

The Italian parliamentarians commended the president's evaluation to these issues and means of finding out a solution. They also commended the depth of analysis the president made to the events in Afghanistan and his future vision to relations among states.

Al-Assad said "what we have seen at the present indicate that the principle of power is dominating international legitimacy."
