A workshop on the national chemical strategy profile

A Workshop under the title " national chemical strategy profile" was held on January 7 and 8 in Damascus.

It was organized by the ministry for Environmental affairs in collaboration with all sides concerned with several country's ministries concerned with management and safety of chemicals Among many other sides, the workshop was attended by the ministries of Health, agriculture, social affairs and Labor, Industry and the ministry of local administration; the ministry of the economy and foreign trade, oil and mineral resources and the civil defense department and private sectors sides concerned.

In a statement to Arabic News, the coordinator of the event Fouad Elok, who is head of chemical Safety at the ministry of Environment said that the national chemical strategy profile aims at studying the current status of already enacted laws, measures and data base at the national level with the aim to organize the process of handling chemicals and to indicate shortcoming and weak points in these laws and regulations used by various sides in a way to conclude certain measurement for improvement and finding out an integrated system that can ensure the safety of those who deal with the chemicals.

He said that works will start to prepare this national profile as from the beginning of the workshop on January 7, 2002.

He added that preparations relating to finalizing the document of the national profile will be completed by the end of June 2002. He said most of the debated researches highlighted the role of various ministries concerned, the university and research centers and the civil defense departments to a safe management of chemicals.

Mr. Elok added that after adopting the " national profile" which will be considered as a " national document," it will be put in the hands of decision makers and will include necessary proposals to eliminate obstacles hindering public safety.

He continued that based on this document, and in collaboration with the Swiss Agency on International Co-operation SICA a date base networking will be formed on dangerous chemicals, noting that this data base will link all sides concerned with chemical safety management to exchange information and provide chemical safety information, at request.
