ALECSO warns against illiteracy in Arab states
Regional, Education, 1/9/2002

The Arab League Education, Culture and Scientific Organization ALECSO has warned against the consequences of illiteracy, a phenomenon which is still widely spread in the Arab states and thereby constituting a barrier to comprehensive development.

In a statement issued on Tuesday ( January 8th) which marks the Arab day on eradication illiteracy, ALECSO secretary general al-Munji Busnenah said that total number of illiterates in the Arab states which tolled 68 millions of both sexes ignites " our" preoccupations and calls for reconsidering the problem of illiteracy seriously.

Busnenah stressed the need of giving top priority to the question of fighting illiteracy in the economic and social plans set by the Arab states as well as to recruit human and material potentials needed to eliminate illiteracy which is a hindering factor to Arab developmental purposes.

He, on the other hand, stressed ALECSO's commitment to eliminate illiteracy in the Arab states and to keep this issue on the forefront of its priorities at present and in the future.
