Sharon exploits the 'weapon ship' incident for further escalation against the Palestinians
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 1/7/2002
Despite the Israeli- Palestinian security meetings taking place under the auspices of the American envoy Anthony Zinni and with the presence of other three international envoys in the region, the Israeli prime minister continues to escalate security conditions in an attempt to undermine the international efforts currently made to settle conditions. To do so, Sharon exploits the case of the ship which Israel claimed had confiscated in the Red Sea and claimed carrying 50 tons of weapons sent to the Palestinian Authority which denied any links to this case.
In this regard the Palestinian official for parliamentary issues Nabil Amre said that that Sharon government continues to escalate security conditions in the Palestinian territories through acts of killing and arrest as well as assassination.
Meantime, the Israeli- Palestinian higher security committee held a meeting on Sunday dedicated to discuss what is called " truce" between the two sides. The meeting was attended by officials from the Israeli army and internal security "Shein Beit" and Zinni was due to take part in it. Zinni stressed following his meeting with the Israeli foreign minister Shimon Peres that security and halting the Palestinian Intifada occupy the priority in his mission.
In the same context, Palestinian sources stressed that it was presumed to convene a meeting between Zinni before leaving the region with the Russian envoy to the ME peace process Andre Vadovin and the higher official for the foreign policy at the European Union Javier Solana and the UN secretary general special envoy Terry Rod Larsen.
The Israeli radio said the meeting dealt with the American developments and efforts to resume negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
Meantime, as a result of the Israeli policy in demolishing the Palestinian houses five brothers were killed ages between 2- 9 years and other three were strongly wounded in a fire caused by a candle that flared in a tent sheltering a Palestinian family in Bani Suheilah town in Khan Younis after the Israeli forces demolished their house in December 2001.
