Syrian source welcomes the convening of the Arab summit in Lebanon
Syria-Libya, Politics, 1/7/2002

The Monte Carlo radio correspondent in Damascus quoted Syrian sources as saying that Syria has repeated its welcome to convening the Arab summit in Beirut in March as implied in the statements recently made by the Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara.

The radio said that the sources commented on what was stated by the Lebanese speaker of parliament Nabih Berri in opposing the convening of the said summit in Beirut by saying that Syria's position is clear. It welcomes the convening of the summit in Beirut and coordination is being made between the Syria and Lebanese governments in this regard regardless to the view of one side or the other.

The sources indicated Arab efforts made with the Libyan President Mu'ammar al-Qaddafi urging him to take part in the Beirut's Arab summit.

The correspondent indicated that al-Qaddafi had asked the secretary general of the Arab League Amre Mousa to transfer the summit to Cairo in order to ensure the participation of all Arab states after it was rumored that Berri did not support the convening of the summit in Beirut on the background of his rejection of al-Qaddafi's participation in it., as al-Qaddafi is held responsible by certain Shiite sides over the disappearance of Shiite Imam Mousa al-Sader.
