UN Security Council welcomes decision to release 115 Moroccan Nationals
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 1/5/2002

The Security Council on Friday welcomed the decision to release 115 Moroccan prisoners from Polisario jails located in Algerian territory.

The current president of the security council, Jagdish Koonjul of Mauritius, told the press some of the prisoners had been in detention for decades.

Following consultations on the issue, the Council members also expressed support for the efforts in this regard by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the European Union, the former special representative of the secretary general, William Eagleton and his successor, ambassador Swing.

The council further invited parties "to abide by their obligations under international humanitarian law to release without further delay all those held since the start of the conflict."
