Al-Baz: The Egyptian ambassador will not return back to Tel Aviv in the near future
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 1/3/2002

The advisor for the Egyptian president for political affairs Osama al-Baz has informed the Arab minister in the Israeli government Saleh Tarif that his country ( Egypt) is not intended to return back the Egyptian ambassador to Tel Aviv in the near future. Al-Baz added that news recently published on appointing a new Egyptian ambassador to Israel are groundless..

Tarif had arrived in Cairo with the aim to meeting with Azzam Azzam, the Arab Druze of the Palestinians of the 1948 territories who has been in jail in a 15- year imprisonment sentence after he was convicted of spying for Israel in Egypt. Tarif said upon his return back to Israel that his meeting with Azzam was " very tough and that Azzam is in a grave and difficult psychological and health conditions and that the Egyptians refused to permit an Israeli doctor to see Azzam and treat him. And Azzam complained because he stays in a very narrow cell for 21 hours a day and then he is put in seclusion for his own safety since Egyptian prisoners tried to liquidate him in 2001."

Tarif said that Azzam cried for several times during his meeting with him at the prison.

News reports said that when Tarif secretly tried to use his camera to take Azzam's photo, the Egyptian prisoners took his camera and confiscated the film.
