US envoy Zinni to return back to the Palestinian territories

An official at the US embassy in Israel said on Tuesday that the US envoy Anthony Zinni will return back to the Palestinian territories.

The official added that Zinni will urge the Palestinian and the Israeli sides to implement a truce in preparations for the possibility of resuming talks.

This statement by the US embassy official was confirmed by chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Oreikat who welcomed the decision taken by the US administration to return back Zinni to the region. Oreikat expressed his hope that during this new tour of Zinni a timetable and mechanism to implement the Mitchell committee package and Tenet recommendations will be drawn in a way to include lifting the siege and all forms of closure; pulling out the Israeli forces to its positions before September 28th, 2000, freezing all forms of settlement activities including the settlements which are being built in occupied Jerusalem, implementing signed agreements, and resuming final negotiations to implement UN resolutions 242 and 338.

Zinni had suspended his mission in the Palestinian territories on December 16, 2001.
