Marathon in the Emirates
United Arab Emirates, Sports, 1/1/2002

Among the big guns who will rub shoulders with the Gulf's heartiest competitors are Sydney Olympic bronze medallist Joyce Chepchumba of Kenya who will return to compete in the 10km run. Last year, Chepchumba -- a big supporter of the Dubai Marathon -- had to settle for second place behind Ethiopia's Tezata Surekli and the Kenyan star will be looking go one better and win at one of her favourite venues in 2002.

The Marathon itself will start and finish at the Dubai World Trade Centre with an early morning start of 7am. The Samsung 10km Run will get underway at 7.30am while the start of the Samsung 3km Fun Run -- which is open to runners of all ages and proves hugely popular -- will be at 11.30am to allow more families to take part.

The race route will be very similar with all the major in-town landmarks of Dubai being passed by the runners. Temperatures are expected to be cool when the runners cross the start line but by the time the leaders are due home at just after 9am the weather will certainly be milder and race organizers are relatively confident of having a runner break the 2h:10m mark.
