Jordan: Islamic Labor Front to take part in the parliamentary elections

Officials in the Islamic Labor Front, the political front for the Muslim Brothers group in Jordan said they are about to take a decision to take part in the parliamentary elections, due to be held, according to governmental sources in the Summer of 2002.

This new inclination by the Islamists who constitute the major Jordanian political parties regarding power and number as well as political presence and political effect at the public opinion after they have realized that their boycotting of the parliamentary elections held in 1997 resulted in their losing of political impact on certain government's decisions especially the crisis erupted between the Palestinian Hamas movement and the government of Abdul Raouf al-Raouf al- Rawabedah. This crisis ended by closing offices of the Hamas movement and expelling its leaders to Qatar under a process supervised by the ruler of Qatar Sheikh Hamad al-Thani.

Commenting on the inclination of the party's bases towards participation as appeared in the party's recent meeting, the party's secretary general Abdul Latif Arabeyat said that the heart of the matter that the party's Shoura council, which is the plenary leading body of 120 members will be meeting next Friday and will decide many things especially approving carrying out internal elections to elect the executive bureau whose term of office expires in January.

On Saturday the party approved recommendations issued by the party's general conference which was held last Friday and Saturday provided for "adopting the national dialogue initiative, a call for Arab and Islamic economic integration and extending invitations to Arab presidents and kings to convene an urgent summit to protect the Palestinian people from the Israeli aggression and to protect the Islamic movements from the repressive American campaign after the incidents of September 11, 2001."
