Organization of Islamic conference backs Libya's efforts to defuse India-Pakistan tension
Libya-Regional, Politics, 12/31/2001

The Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) supports the Libyan President Mouammar Kaddafi's efforts to defuse tension between India and Pakistan.

The OIC support was expressed in a phone conversation between the OIC secretary general, Abdelouahed Belkeziz, and Libyan secretary for African Unity, Abdeslam Triki.

Belkeziz lauded Kaddafi's efforts to water down the tension between the two countries. He said he was confident that the Libyan leader is capable of making big strides in defusing tension between India and Pakistan.

The Libyan Popular Congress (Parliament), which wound up Friday its annual session, decided to dispatch a special envoy to the two countries to get informed on the outcome of the talks the Libyan leader had had with the President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, and the Prime Minister of India, Atal Behari Vajpayee.

The Libyan leader had spoken in an address before the congress of the talks he had had with the Pakistani and Indian leaders following the escalation of tension between India and Pakistan.

Since the attack of December 13 against the Indian Parliament, tension has been rising between India and Pakistan, which have been at loggerheads for 50 years over Kashmir. New Delhi accuses Islamabad of sheltering Kashmir separatist movements. During the last days, important forces were deployed on both sides of the border between the two countries, which both possess nuclear weapons.
