Morocco-Iraq, Culture, 12/31/2001

Moroccan Prime Minister, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, received Saturday in Rabat, the members of the Iraqi troupe "Fen Wa Tourat" that performed in several Moroccan cities a play on the life of Moroccan martyr Mohamed Zerktouni.

The meeting surveyed several Arab issues and stressed the need to consolidate cultural ties between the Moroccan and Iraqi people.

The play, retracing Zerktouni's Resistance and struggle against French colonialism and the last moments of his life was performed by renowned actors, including Sami Kaftan, Aouatef Salmane, Haidar Khalid, faycal Jawad and Chadha salem.

An emblematic figure of Morocco's fight for independence, Zerktouni was the spearhead of resistance in Casablanca and in several other parts of Morocco. He was killed by the French occupiers in 1954.

The play came into being thanks to joint efforts by the union of Iraqi artists and the Zerktouni Foundation.
