Al-Mahdi calls for the expansion of legislation sources to include divine religions, Sudanese cultures
Sudan, Politics, 12/29/2001

The chairman of the Sudanese opposition al-Ummah party al-Sadeq al-Mahdi has called for amending the constitution of the country before discussing details of any peace agreement with the armed groups in southern Sudan, because "signing an peace agreement with any group without democratic transformation will make this agreement, and therefore it has to be protected by a democratic constitution backed by people."

Al-Mahdi added that the constitution should be federal, presidential and democratic and can guarantee human rights states by international charters, besides equality in citizenship.

He also indicated that the constitution he proposes should state that " source of the legislation should be vast, and to be in addition to the Islamic Shareia to include other divine religions, the Sudanese cultures and international charter."
