Yemen announces the names of two wounded for connection to al-Qaeda

Officials at the Yemeni police said on Thursday that investigations are being held with Arab and foreign students studying at a religious institute in a remote area to the east of Sanaa.

An official Yemeni daily announced the names of two men chased by the authorities in Sanaa under the pretext of having links to al-Qaeda networking led by Osama Bin Laden.

A Yemeni security official said that more than 10 students from the Daar al-Hadith institute in Ma'reb ( 170 km to the east of Sanaa) who belong to Arab and foreign nationalities currently detained over suspicion of being involved in acts violating security.

The institute which teaches the principles of Islam in Obeid district which on December 18 witnessed violent clashes between government forces and tribesmen over being members in al- Qaeda organization they resorted to after fleeing from Afghanistan. Some 16 civilian and 24 military men including one army officer were killed in these clashes.

Since one week, special Yemeni forces are carrying out chasing operations in remote area in the central and northern parts of the country to arrest persons suspected to have links to Osama Bin Lade,.

To this effect, the Yemeni " September 26 paper " issued by the Yemeni ministry of defense disclosed that two of the top wanted who are chased under charges of belonging to al-Qaeda are called Ali Qaed al-Harithi, better known as " Abu Ali al-Harithi and Muhammad Hamdi al-Ahdal, known as ( Abu Asem al-Ahdal).

Western diplomats said that most of the extremists in Yemen are former old war warriors in the Afghani war who fought against the Soviet occupation forces in the 1980s. Many of those old warriors enjoy the protection of strong tribe leaders in the mountainous areas.
