Lebanese president discusses with AL chief preparations for the Arab summit

Lebanese President Emil Lahoud has stressed Lebanon's readiness to receive the ordinary Arab summit scheduled in March 2002 in implementation of the recent Amman's summit. He explained that necessary preparation for convening this summit are almost completed at various levels.

The Lebanese President informed the secretary general of the Arab league (AL) Amr Moussa during his meeting with him at Baabda palace on Monday in the presence of the Lebanese foreign minister Mahmoud Hammoud that Lebanon is looking forward for this summit to achieve more Arab solidarity and clinging to withstand challenges imposed on the Arab states.

President Lahoud expressed his hope that the next summit will draw prospects of next Arab move, especially as security, political and economic issues debated to the Arab states in this summit are numerous and require decisive decisions pertinent to the future of the Arab role in the process of regional and international developments.

Lahoud stressed the acceleration of incidents on the Palestinian arena and the threats launched by Israel against the Arab states require effective Arab stances to establish a just and comprehensive peace in the region. He stressed that violence will not be the alternative for peaceful solutions based on rightfulness and justice.

Lahoud's talks with the AL chief dealt with current conditions in the region and the world and Lebanon's position concerning them as well as Arab efforts to withstand the current conditions and current preparations to convene the Arab summit in Beirut.

Following the meeting, Moussa stressed the AL support for Lebanon's position towards the liberation of parts of south Lebanon that are still under the Israeli occupation. The AL chief denied that the AL had been exposed to pressures concerning its position towards the Palestinian question, noting that worse threats is expected to be launched by Israel against Syria and Lebanon as these threats are made by military Israeli authorities.

Meantime, the Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri discussed with Moussa conditions in the region and current preparations to convene the Arab summit in Lebanon in March 2002.

In an arrival statement he made in Beirut on Monday in a visit which lasted for several hours said " the Israeli aggressive policy will lead to a huge fire in the region.

He indicated that his visit to Beirut aims at discussing current preparations to convene the forthcoming Arab summit in March 2002 in Beirut.
