Egyptian-European finance to meda-2 projects
Egypt-European Union, Economics, 12/22/2001

European Union (EU) Ambassador to Cairo Ian Boag yesterday underlined the importance of a national guide program of cooperation with the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership countries, from which Egypt benefits in financing several projects within the Meda-2 European aid programme.

In statements to MENA, Boag said that Egypt will benefit from this new program, slated to be launched during the period between 2002 and 2006, in carrying out several projects in the fields of technical vocational training, development of trade with the EU and integrated local development in South Sinai.

Boag referred to Egypt's benefiting from the Meda-1 program which started in the period between 1996 and 2000, by virtue of which the volume of EU appropriations to Egypt hit 615 million euro to modernise Egyptian industry and develop education and culture as well as cooperation in the field of scientific research.

The EU ambassador said Egypt did not receive all these appropriations because there were some restrictions on the EU budget, adding the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership countries receive aid according to their needs.

He noted that he will meet later with Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Fayza Abul-Naga and may be with Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher to discuss the national guide programme of cooperation between the EU and Egypt.

On development of the situation between the Palestinians and Israelis, Boag expressed the EU's keenness on realizing peace in this region near to Europe, stressing the necessity that the two parties should sit at the negotiating table to settle all the problems that trigger all acts of violence between them.
