UN GA stresses Syrian sovereignty over the Golan, calls for sending UN observers to the occupied territories
Syria-Israel, Politics, 12/22/2001

The UN Security Council General Assembly GA has renewed Syria's sovereignty on the Golan heights, its natural resources and also the sovereignty of the Palestinians on the occupied territories including Jerusalem.

The resolution which was adopted by the UN General Assembly GA on Friday in its general session no 90 with the majority of 148 votes and the objection of Israel, the US, Marshal islands and Micronesia stressed the principle of the invalidity to acquire the lands of others by means of force and the UN security council resolutions concerned especially UN resolution 497 of 1981 which described illegal the Israeli annexation of the Golan and considered this israeli decision on the Golan as null and void.

The resolution also confirmed that the fourth Geneva agreement on the protection of civilians at times of war is applicable on all territories occupied by Israel since 1967. It also stressed the need of immediate resumption of the peace process in the region, according to UN security council resolution 242 for 1967 and 338 for 1973 and 425 for 1978 and the land for peace formula.

The resolution expressed the concern of the international society over Israel's exploitation of the natural resources in the occupied Arab territories since 1967, stressing the right of the people of the Golan to their natural resources including the land and the waters.

On Thursday evening, the UN general assembly adopted with a great majority a non- obligatory resolution calling for sending UN observers to the occupied Palestinian territories after the US had used the veto on a draft resolution to this effect last week.

The decision which was proposed by the Palestinians and got the consent of 124 votes, opposed by 6 with 25 countries abstained, described the Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories as illegal as an obstacle in the way to peace.
