Palestine-Israel, Politics, 12/22/2001
Fears of civil fighting among the Palestinians started to loom on the Palestinian arena after the Palestinian authorities has started to comply to the Israeli demands by escalating its measures against the Intifada cadres.
News reports reported the eruption of clashes between the Palestinian Authority Police and members of the Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements, describing the Palestinian situation as very complicated.
The preliminary result of the clashes was five killings and 55 wounded, while a 6th Palestinian was shot during a funeral for one members of the Islamic Jihad in Jabalia camp near Gaza.
Among the killings were known Aziz al-Sawarkah and Mahmoud Abdul Rahman and al-Muqyyad.
In this respect the Hamas movement said the decision it has taken to halt "suicide operations " inside Israel preserves the right to resist the occupation and retaliate the crimes committed by Israel against the Palestinian people. This decision came following a plenary meeting between PA officials and high ranking leaders of Hamas.
Meantime, the leading figure in Hamas Abdul Aziz al-Ranteisi stressed he refused to surrender himself, stressing he will preserve his right to freedom because he fights for the sake of the Palestinians people.
Al-Ranteisi stressed that Hamas did not stop its operations against the Israeli occupation and the news broadcast to this effect are fabricated. " we did not release any statement in this respect." He added the attempts made by the PA to arrest him came in the context of responding to the Israeli and American instructions. He continued the failure of the attempt made to detain him was because of the Palestinian people who deterred this attempt, stressing continued Palestinian struggle against occupation until liberating the lands and restoring back the legitimate rights..
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad said it will continue resistance as far as occupation continues. One of the movement's leader Abdullah al-Shami said that no one Palestinian seeks internal confrontation and that there is no way but to resort to a dialogue among the Palestinians.
