Libya-Regional, Politics, 12/22/2001
On the sideline of the emergency meeting of the Arab foreign ministers held in Cairo on Thursday, Egypt's foreign minister Ahmad Maher met with the secretary general of the people's committee for African relations in Libya Ali Abdul Salaam al-Tureiki.
Following the meeting, the Libyan official said he had discussed with Maher several issues including the Egyptian- Libyan joint initiative concerning Sudan. He added it was agreed to set a date for the meeting of the special initiative committee concerning Sudan before the end of the current month December in Cairo in addition to discussing Libyan- Egyptian bilateral relations.
As for the American threats to expand strikes after Afghanistan and to target certain Arab states under the pretext of fighting terrorism, al-Tureiki said " the Arab position is clear. We do condemn terrorism and stand firmly with the international community and call for convening an international conference to define terrorism and to embark on an international act to fight it." Al-Tureiki stressed:" we are the victims of terrorism, whether being in Libya or Egypt or others. Regrettably the terrorism we are the victims of had existed in Europe and the US in the past, and if they are serious now that have to act in this framework."
He asserted that:" we as Arabs are facing a state terrorism embodied in the Israeli terrorism in killing and assassinating the Palestinian leaderships or occupying the lands or uprooting trees. And therefore the world has also to stand with us against this Israeli terrorism which has been conducted against the Palestinian people and the Arab nation." As for the Libyan efforts to help the Afghani Arabs to get out of Afghanistan, al-Tureiki said that:" al-Qaddafi charity foundation has made efforts to this end. And I do think this foundation continues to do so as it a humanitarian and charity body."
Concerning the consent of the Sudanese sides and their answers to the memorandum of the Libyan- Egyptian initiative on Sudan, al-Tureiki said:" we have received replies from all Sudanese sides including the Sudanese coalition which renewed its approval on this initiative and showed remarks that the Sudanese can discuss in their conference." Al-Tureiki stressed in his statements that the Egyptian - Libyan initiative is the only initiative debate don the arena and that can attain peace in Sudan.
He elaborated:" we in Egypt and Libya coordinate with IGAD and Egypt and Libya will take part in the IGAD's summit to be held in the mid of January 2002, which will be held in Sudan." Al-Tureiki indicated that the preparatory conference in preparations for the Sudanese reconciliation conference will be held by the end of January, most expectedly, in Cairo."
