The first office for the European commission in the Gulf to be shortly opened in al-Riyadh
Gulf-European Union, Economics, 12/21/2001

The European Union has achieved on December 18 a basic step towards strengthening its trade and economic relations with the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council by declaring the opening of an official office for the European Commission EC in al-Riyadh.

This was declared in a message sent on December 18 the European Union Commissioner for foreign relations Cress Patten to Lord Prayer, the chairman of the Arab- British chamber of commerce. The director of the chamber in London Abdul Karim al-Mudarres welcomed the EC decision, though considered it as late before the annual trade balance for exchanges between the two sides which is in the interest of the EU member states.

The European trade surplus for 2000 with the Gulf Co-operation Council GCC member state exceeded USD 20 billion.

Al-Mudarres said that despite the fact that the GCC market comes in the fifth grade among the consumer markets of the various products of the EU and despite the fact that the Gulf is a strategic area for the European interests, yet the EU has not delegated a special mission that facilitates the work of GCC businessmen especially travel and transport measures to Europe to sign their deals.
