Exhibition on the architecture of Apolodro, the Damascene opened in Damascus
Syria-Italy, Culture, 12/20/2001

Under the patronage of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and the Italian President Carlo Chambi a scientific seminar on the achievements of the great Syrian architect Apolodro, the Damascenes was opened don Wednesday morning at the Damascus national Museum.

Simultaneously the exhibition " between Damascus and Rome: the architecture of Abolodro the Damascene in the classic culture " will be opened today ( Thursday) at 6.30 p.m. ( Damascus local time) in Khan Asaad pacha at the old town of Damascus.

Both the seminar and the exhibition were organized with the aim to highlight common cultural traditions between Syria and Italy by the Syrian ministry of culture and the Italian embassy and cultural center in Damascus in collaboration with Rome universities for studies; the general directorate for cultural properties in Rome and the general directorate for antiquities and museums in Damascus.

Both the exhibition and the seminar aim to acknowledge about one of the greatest architects in old times." he was born in Damascus in 60 A. D. and died in 125 A.D." The two events shed light on the most important works carried out by the great Syrian architect Apolordo the Damascene in Rome, at the request of Emperor Trajan and Emperor Adrian.

Apolodro had made unmatched architectural works in Rome date back to the Greek and Roman eras and this enabled him to be the executor of most works for Emperor Trajan, including the bathrooms, the Empire settings and other works. Later he carried out architectural works representing the intensive activities of Empire Adrian.

Among his most remarkable architectural works in Damascus is the remains of Jupitar temple near the Umayyad's mosque which is considered the nucleus for the first documentary museum whose headquarters will be the national museum in Damascus.

The exhibition includes 16 cuts for Trajan's column at the natural size altogether with documents and illustrations in Arabic and Italian as well as broadcasting documentary films on the most important works designed by Apolordo.

Due to the great importance of this exhibition a bilingual Arabic- Italian catalogue of 500 page was printed, including 64 colored pictures and 100 slides.

Worthy mentioning this exhibition will last until January 20, 2002 and then it will be transferred to the national Museum in Damascus where it will be an eternal evidence on the old- established relations between Syria and Italy.
