The US and Islam
Regional-USA, Religion, 12/19/2001

Certain movements and establishments in the US have been active to explain the principles of Islam and its teaching prompted by great turnout to know about Islam following the incidents in New York and Washington in September.

In this regard, the American Islamic Council sent this month to US government agencies some 10,000 colored bulletins explaining the basic principles of Islam which call for amity, tolerance and peace.

A spokeswoman for the council said that council feels satisfied over the vast areas and numerous programs dedicated by the main American mass media about Islam and the seven American Muslims in the US.

She added " we see every day news and programs about Islam that we have not seen before and even until 2000 it was difficult to get information about Islam as this matter used to take hours of research at Internet sites. But now these information are everywhere and all call for tolerance and amity.

" Scholastic corp." which is one of the largest children publication and advertising company was among the first companies which responded to the call made by the US President George Bush in order to avoid discrimination against American Muslims and Arabs.

The said company which deals with almost 25 million children from all American schools issued weeklies full of information about Muslims, all urging tolerance.

David Juddy, chief editor of " Scholastic" said that his company speaks about Islam in its coverage of world religions at least since five years, noting that this company has a huge web-site on the Internet speak about religions, including Islam.

" Moira Megarfi" of " Inter-Link" house for publication which has Massasushists as a headquarters explained they receive numerous requests to request the Koran and books about the Middle East, noting that a book in Arab poetess has become very popular.

For his part, the chairman of the Arab- American institute James Zoughbi who made great efforts to sending files about Islam to schools stressed that the American public opinion has voted for 6 to one for a friendly position towards the American Muslims, which indicates that the image formed against Muslims following the incidents of September 11 in the US can be maintained.
