Algerian interior minister hails solidarity surges towards flood-affected algeria
Algeria-Morocco, Politics, 12/14/2001

Algerian minister of the interior, Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni, paid tribute to the solidarity surges expressed to Algeria following the floods that affected the country last month.

The Algerian official made the statement on Wednesday during a dinner hosted in honor of the Moroccan and German rescue teams that were dispatched to Algeria, following the floods.

He voiced his country's appreciation for these solidarity actions, especially on the part of friendly and neighboring countries and highlighted the good work conducted by foreign rescue teams. "We highly appreciate the efforts they exerted," Zerhouni was quoted by El Moudjahid daily as saying.

He said he visited these teams on the field several times to express Algeria's recognition.

Morocco had extended an assistance to flood-stricken Algeria (6.5 tons of medicine, 5,500 blankets and 200 tents) and put at its disposal thirty civil rescue agents.

The Wilaya of Casablanca also dispatched an 18-member technical assistance mission that cleaned out 220 sewage inspection holes, unblocked canals and pumped 2,000 cubic meters at Bab El Oued, the district that was most severely affected by the floods.

The technicians who arrived in Algeria on November 23 will carry on their mission for twenty more days, head of the mission told MAP.
