King Mohammed voices Morocco's concern over events in the middle east
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 12/13/2001

Morocco's King Mohammed VI has expressed Morocco's concern over the events in the Middle East region and insisted that any attempt to undermine the Palestinian national authority would be a serious threat to security and stability in the region.

The sovereign made the statement when he received in Fez Wednesday US assistant secretary of state for the Middle east, William Burns.

The sovereign told Burns that Morocco was deeply concerned over the events in the region and insisted on the need to intensify efforts and take quick action to contain the situation before it runs out of control, especially following the turn of events during the past period, in the Israeli military escalation, threatening the Palestinian Authority, a statement by the royal office said.

The king insisted that the Palestinian National Authority was the sole legitimate authority, able to play the role of a partner in the establishment of a fair and lasting peace in the region. Any attempt to undermine this authority would be a serious threat to security and stability in the region, the king said, adding that the only option to come out of the current deadlock is to go back to the negotiation table and to reactivate the peace process on agreed upon bases.

Burns, who is visiting Morocco part of a tour in the countries of the Middle East and north Africa, informed the king on the results of his tour.
