Maher condemns Israeli repressive measures against Palestinians
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 12/11/2001
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher reaffirmed Monday Egypt's firm stance in support of the Palestinian people's legitimate right to resist.
In statements on the fringes of the emergency Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) foreign ministerial meeting, in Doha, Maher underlined that Egypt's position reflects the stance of those who believe in just peace.
The top Egyptian diplomat condemned the Israeli practices, asserting that they should immediately be brought to an end.
Maher highlighted the importance of the OIC meeting which should bring about a decisive stance in the face of Israeli policies.
Asked whether he had conveyed an Egyptian message to the Israeli government during his recent visit to Tel Aviv, Maher said he stressed the importance of recognizing the Palestinian people's rights.
Our message was the necessity of ending Israel's repressive policies against the Palestinian people, Maher said.
Asked about preventing Arafat from attending Doha's meeting, Maher said such an Israeli decision was part of the Israeli repressive policies against the Palestinian people and part of illegitimate Israeli measures in the occupied lands.
Queried about the fate of the Middle East peace process in view of the latest developments, Maher said the peace process could not be terminated, being the demand of all neighbouring peoples.
The means to face the Israeli-placed obstacles on the road to peace is the real challenge at the current stage, Maher added.
Asked about US Mideast envoy Anthony Zinni's threat to leave the region, Maher said it was prompted by Israel's failure to cooperate with or respond to the Palestinian proposals on an all-out plan of action to push forward peace talks.
The Palestinian delegation has submitted an integrated plan that would help accelerate the re-launch of negotiations, but the Israeli side did not take any step but rather maintained its acts of aggression on the Palestinian people, Maher stressed.
