The Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am issued on Saturday said that the economic court in Damascus had sentenced the Syrian former Deputy Premier Salim Yassin and the former transport minister Mufieed Abdul Karim as well as the Syrian businessman Munir Abu Khaddour for 22 and a half years imprisonment and charged them to pay a fine altogether of USD 268 million and of 400 million Syrian pounds as a compensation for the Syrian airline company. Tunisia ratified a free trade accord with Iraq, a Tunisian diplomat based in the Iraqi capital city said. The accord is meant to ease the flow of goods between Iraq and Tunisia through lowering customs and administrative barriers. Go

Egypt's balance of payment of oil scored $ 1.2 billion surplus in 2001 against a surplus of $ 510 million in 2000, Egyptian oil minister Sameh Fahmi said Sunday. The Jordanian minister of State and official spokesman for the Jordanian government Saleh al-Qallab has denied sending Jordanian troops to separate between the Palestinian and the Israelis. Go

The Israeli daily Yadhout Ahronot said on Sunday that the Israeli defense minister Benjamin Bin Aliazer met last Thursday with the economic advisor of the chairman of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Rasheed. The paper quoted Bin Aliazer as saying during the meeting that the key is now in the hands of Arafat. He claimed that Israel is ready to take positive steps towards the Palestinians if what he called" terrorism" is suspended. Bin Aliazer also said that Israel does not want to harm Arafat nor to alienate him from the Palestinian territories.The Israeli radio reported. Go
