American proposal to deploy Jordanian forces in the West Bank

Some 4500 Arab soldiers in the Israeli army

The Palestinian National resistance movement the Islamic Jihad has denied to have released any statement that threatens the Palestinian national unity. In a statement, the movement explained that despite its rejection to what the Palestinian Authority security forces are carrying out of a campaign of arrest of national resistance members, yet it stressed care to maintain the Palestinian national unity in challenge of the " Zionist attack." The Lebanese daily al-Mustaqbal said on Friday quoting special information source that the chairman of the Israeli intelligence Afraem Haleivy on Wednesday visited Cairo secretly and held security talks with the chairman of the Egyptian intelligence Lt. Gen. Omar Suleiman. The paper said that this was in contrary to news reports which said that Suleiman was the one who had visited Tel Aviv. Go

Yemen said on Friday it has been chasing two prominent tribesmen the US suspects as two agents in al-Qaida networking. A Yemeni government official told reporters that the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh agreed with his American counterpart George Bush to arrest the two men but he did not give any other details. Syria's President Bashar al-Assad on Friday performed Friday's prayer at the grand al-Mahatta ( station) mosque in Daraa. He was accompanied by the Daraa party branch secretary and governor, high ranking governorate officials and crowded number of citizens. Go

The Lebanese foreign minister Mahmoud Hammoud has received a telephone call from the Secretary general of the Arab League Amr Moussa in the framework of consultation being held to convene the meeting of the Arab and Islamic foreign ministers in Doha. Go

President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt will visit Morocco early 2002 at the invitation of King Mohammed VI. The announcement was made Saturday morning in Cairo by Moroccan foreign affairs and cooperation minister, Mohamed Benaissa after his meeting with President Mubarak. Go

The US ambassador to Lebanon Vincent Battle has announced that developments in the region led to the postponement of the visit of the US under secretary of state for the near East Affairs William Burns to Beirut. Go

18 Moroccan candidates to illegal emigration were arrested Thursday off the shores of the Spanish southern city of Almeria. The group of undocumented travelers, including three minors, were intercepted while they were on board a small boat. Go
