Mubarak's initiative positive step for halting violence
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 12/8/2001

Positive reactions have come in succession from the United States and western countries to the latest Egyptian initiative for containing deteriorating situation between Israel and Palestinians.

Political quarters have expressed their satisfaction with the visit paid by Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher to Tel Aviv and Ramallah on Thursday and his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres.

In a telephone conversation with President Mubarak, US President George Bush described the Egyptian initiative as extremely positive for halting violence and involves measures that could help rein in terrorist operations so that peace march could be restored.

Meantime, US Presidential National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice said in an exclusive interview to A1 Ahram that Presidents Mubarak and Bush have agreed on the need for joint and urgent moves for containing volatile situation in the Occupied Palestinian territories.

She said that the two leaders agreed on holding tripartite US, Israel and Palestinian security talks at highest levels for ending the closure, lifting siege on Palestinian cities and villages and easing restrictions on Palestinians.

She said that the two leaders are of the opinion that the best way for achieving peace is to carry out the steps and measures contained in Mitchell committee report.

Rice said that the US administration is calling on Arafat to exert efforts 100 percent for controlling extremists and containing terrorism.

However, she expressed the belief that there are elements which cannot be controlled.
