United Arab Emirates nominated to preside over G77
United Arab Emirates-Regional, Politics, 12/8/2001
The Arab group at the G77 unanimously nominated the United Arab Emirates UAE's representative to UNESCO Dr. Hussein Ghabbash to be its nominee for the presidency of the G77 which was established in 1964 and has now 130 countries including China, despite the fact it keeps its old name of ( G-77).
The group, however, has a great impact on UNESCO's programs, projects and decisions as well as on UNESCO's agreements. It initially aims at defending the interests of the developing states in the organization and basically interested in supporting cultural and educational projects, foremost being eradication of illiteracy and elimination of poverty in the world.
Worthy mentioning that any decision to be taken by UNESCO has to be approved by the said group.
Moreover, the G77 includes four sub groupings: The Latin America group; Africa Group; Asia group and the Arab group. Successively, each of the said group nominates one candidate to preside over the G 77, This time the Arab group will have its nominee and the elections will be in January 2001. The UAE plays an effective role in bringing together stances of the Arab group inside the UNESCO.
