Bahrain: Information ministry confirms its right to detain any writer
Bahrain, Politics, 12/7/2001

The Bahraini ministry of information on Wednesday stressed that the " prints law" avails it the right to " arrest and try" the one who provokes" hatred for one or more communities of people."

A source at the ministry said that:" article 41 of the law gives the ministry of information the right to arrest and try every one who provokes hating one community or communities of people or making fun of it," especially if such a provocation will result in " violating the general security and lead to a split in the society."

The source explained that the writings of Hafez al-Sheikh Saleh, whom the ministry of information decided to try are not in line the ambitions to maintain national unity.

Meantime, the Bahraini writer Muhammad Ahmad Mahami said that the minister of information does not have the authority to suspend any journalist from writing, according to any enacted law in Bahrain, noting that when the minister gave his decision ( to detain and try journalist Saleh,) he did not relate his decision to any enacted law.
