Efforts to convene the Islamic summit next week

The Arab and Islamic arena is witnessing accelerated steps and contacts towards convening an emergency Islamic summit to review the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.

Islamic conference sources said that the Organization circulated messages to leaders of the Islamic states which are members at the OIC to convene an emergency summit concerning the Israeli aggressions against the Palestinians and the sources expected this summit to be shortly held in Doha and most expectedly next week.

On Wednesday the Saudi capital al-Riyadh was the focal place of discussions and contacts on developments in the region.

The Saudi crown prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz received a telephone call from the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and another telephone call from the ruler of Qatar Sheikh hamad Bin Khaleifa al-Thani whose country assumes the rotating presidency of the Organization of the Islamic Conference OIC.

In a telephone call he made with Qatar's crown prince on Monday Arafat asked for convening an emergency conference for the OIC in order to discuss the Israeli attacks against the Palestinians.

Meantime, the Qatari news agency said the Qatari foreign minister discussed in a telephone call he held on Tuesday evening with the Saudi foreign minister Prince Saud al-Faisal: conditions and developments in the Palestinian territories and the convening of an emergency summit for the OIC member states." In Doha, the Qatari news agency added that the Iranian foreign minister Dr. kamal Kharazi stressed the need of convening a summit for the OIC member states.

The agency said that Kharazzi stressed during a telephone call he made with his Qatar's peer Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem al-Thani the " need of convening an emergency OIC summit to study the current condition in the Palestinian territories." The agency explained that Kharazi and Sheikh Hamad discussed:" latest developments in the Palestinian territories which have been witnessing Israeli revenge operations which are unprecedented since 1994.
