Mubarak's talks in China to cover economic cooperation
Egypt-China, Economics, 12/6/2001
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will discuss during his visit to China, scheduled early 2002, prospects of economic, cultural, scientific, educational and technological cooperation, said China's Ambassador to Egypt yesterday.
Liu Xiao Ming said Mubarak's visit to China would be the first after the two countries signed a strategic cooperation agreement.
He added that Mubarak and Chinese President Jiang Zemin would exchange viewpoints on the problems that have emerged in the wake of the September 11 attacks and their impact on the world situation.
"The two leaders would also discuss the possibility of backing cooperation in the field of fighting terrorism and the latest developments of the Middle East peacemaking drive," Liu said.
Mubarak's visit is of special importance as it comes after China has joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) and so the visit will give a chance to discuss promoting cooperation among the developing countries inside the organization in order to create a new global world where justice can prevail.
On dumping the Egyptian market with Chinese products, he said, the Chinese institutions are following the rules of the market and are running their businesses independently. And so the government cannot interfere in their work."
But if there was any kind of smuggling, the Chinese government is ready to cooperate with the Egyptian authorities in this respect because it is harming the economy of both countries, he noted.
Referring to the major leaps the Egyptian Chinese trade has witnessed, the diplomat said the volume of trade exchange reached dlrs 907 million in 2000 compared to dlrs 660 million in 1998 with 20 percent increase.
Also, Egyptian exports to China rose to dlrs 102 million in 2000 against dlrs 31 million in 1998, he added.
