Bahrain, Politics, 12/6/2001
In an unprecedented case in Bahrain, the Bahraini journalist Hafez al-Sheikh Saleh has filed a case against the minister of information Nabil Yaqoub al-Homor because of banning him from writing in a local paper.
Hafez al-Shaiek told reporters that he had filed a case at the ministery of information because al-Homor ordered suspending him from writing. Sheikh Saleh indicated that the ministry rumored later in that no such directives were released, but Sheikh stresses that he had a message from the daily Akhbar al-Khaleij saying that he is banned from writing at the directives of the minister of information. Sheikh Saleh said that the law will consider his case in a session to be held next Saturday.
In November, the Bahraini ministry of information said it had decided to try writer Hafez al-Sheikh because of his articles which are " in compliance with the ambitions to confirm national unity." For her part, the chairperson of human rights society in Bahrain Dr. Sabeika al-Najjar commented on this case as saying" what the ministry of information has done is a violation to the law and the decision to suspend the writer from writing should be released by the court, rather the ministry of information and what happened revealed that Sheikh Saleh was suspended from writing before an accusation was proved against him."
Sheikh was summoned for investigation after the ministry of information tried to try him. It was decided to detain him and he was released by a guarantee and then prevented from traveling outside the country.
