Pharaonic gold mines unearthed
Egypt, Politics, 12/5/2001

The Hungarian expedition for antiquities, assigned by Gaballah Ali Gaballah, the Secretary General of the Egyptian Supreme Council for Antiquities (ESCA) to perform excavations in the Eastern Desert, was able to discover several ancient mines of outstanding importance.

More than one of those mines were utilized by the ancient Egyptians to extract gold. Some other mines were used to dig out precious stones with which trinkets, necklaces and bracelets were ornamented.

The expedition found out as well other ancient sites where mine-laborers lived. Inside those buildings some tools, that were used to get gold, were also discovered.

The general manager of Qena and The Red Sea antiquities said that the expedition is trying now to know the names of those ancient mines and the Pharaonic titles given to them at that time. He added that the mines are in good conditions if concerned authorities are interested in re-exploiting them.
