Maher meets with Egyptian community in US

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher Tuesday held an expanded meeting with Egyptian community in the United States at the premises of the Egyptian Consulate in New York.

The meeting was attended by a large number of Egyptian American intellectuals, members of the Egyptian community in the United States, and Egypt's Consul Ambassador Mahmoud Allam.

Maher conveyed greetings of President Hosni Mubarak and explained the steadfast stances of the Egyptian policy regarding the need to establish just peace and restore the rights of the Palestinian people.

Allam told reporters following the meeting that Maher listened to problems facing the Egyptians living in the United States especially as such meeting comes at a critical time following the September 11 attacks on the United States.

Maher reviewed the latest developments in the Middle East and the events of Monday in the occupied territories and explained Egypt's experiment in combating territories, Allam said. He tackled the outcome of his visit to Washington and his meetings with American officials, he added.

The detention of Egyptian nationals following the September 11 events topped the agenda of talks between Maher and American officials, he said.

Asked about the number of Egyptian detainees, Allam said they are hundreds, pointing out that contacts are held daily with the American authorities to follow-up developments.

Some of them have already been released and others didn't carry any identification or residence card. Several were deported to Egypt, he said.
