Egypt calls upon handling African disputes, and return of stability to Somalia
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 12/5/2001

Egypt stressed the necessity of speeding-up the Africa disputes, and pointed to the significant role of the United Nations (UN) in the settlement of disputes in a peaceful manner.

This stance was expressed in Egypt's statement at the UN Genera Assembly, delivered by Ambassador Ahmed Abul-Gheit, the permanent delegate to the UN.

He said that the situation in Somalia couldn't continue as such, without any role of the international community to restore peace and stability in this country.

There are no serious international efforts to make peace between the various factions, and to keep peace on its lands.

Abul-Gheit pointed to the pledge of African leaders to consolidate the existing machineries for management of disputes on both regional and continental levels, and to maintain the aims and principles stipulated in Cairo Declaration that created a machinery to prevent and handle the African disputes.

This is a basic part of the aims and principles of the African Union.

Abul-Gheit further pointed out that despite the continuous developments in the African continent, whether positive or negative, it could be mentioned that Africa has opened a new page in its modern history after launching the new African initiative known as the "New Partnership for the Development of Africa."
