Al-Assad confers with Spanish foreign minister

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday evening at the Damascus al-Shaab palace received the Spanish foreign minister Josip Peket and members of the accompanying delegation.

The meeting was attended by the foreign minister Farouk al- Shara.

Peket conveyed to President al-Assad greetings of the Spanish King Juan Carlos and prime minister Jose Aznar and the President asked Peket to convey reply greetings and good wishes to the Spanish King and Premier.

Discussions dealt with the course of developments and events linked to the war against Afghanistan, the importance of identifying terrorism and the need of dealing with its reasons at the regional and international levels so as to exterminate it.

Discussions also dealt with the acts carried out by the Israeli forces against the Palestinian people and the importance of the European role in achieving just and comprehensive peace in the region. They also indicated the importance of the European role to achieving just and comprehensive peace in the region and the implementation of international legitimacy resolutions and the Madrid conference terms of reference.

Discussions also dealt with means of developing c-operation relations between the two countries in all walks of life.

Earlier in the day the Syrian foreign minister al-Shara and Peket discussed in an official meeting latest regional and international developments especially the policy of terrorism conducted by Israel in the region and its military aggression against the unarmed Palestinians in the occupied territories.

The two ministers also discussed bilateral relations between Syria and Spain and means of developing it in all fields.
