Moroccan official calls for lifting blockade on people sequestered in Tindouf
Morocco, Politics, 12/4/2001
A Moroccan official on Monday called on international organizations, peace loving forces and human rights activists throughout the world to endeavor to lift the blockade imposed on the women, children and men sequestered in the camps of Tindouf, stronghold of the Polisario in south-western Algeria.
Minister in charge of women condition, family and childhood protection and integration of disabled persons, Nezha Chekrouni, launched the call at the opening of a solidarity day, held in the southern city of Laayoune, at the initiative of a local association dealing with disabled persons, under the topic "for the lifting of the blockade on our disabled brethren sequestered in Tindouf."
Ms Chekrouni said this solidarity day evidences the human goals, militant ethics and sense of solidarity between the sons of this region and confirms their attachment to the unity of the nation and to the consolidation of the ties of brotherhood and solidarity between all the layers of the Moroccan society.
Ms Chekrouni denounced the sufferings inflicted in Tindouf on the children, women, elderly and disabled persons, who are deprived of the right to return to their homeland, in blatant violation of all international conventions. She called for further struggle to fulfil Morocco's legitimate claims concerning the lifting of the blockade imposed on these persons to enable them return to their homeland, and for further mobilization to speed up a definitive settlement of the artificial tension created about Morocco's southern provinces. She also renewed Moroccans unshakable attachment to their country's unity and their resolve to oppose any attempt to harm this unity.
The event, held on the occasion of the World Disabled Persons Day, was attended by representatives of associations from all over Morocco, who came to Laayoune to voice solidarity with their co-citizens sequestered in Tindouf by the Polisario, an Algerian-backed separatist movement claiming the independence of the Sahara.
