Egyptian Caligraphy exhibits attract French tourists
Egypt-France, Culture, 12/3/2001
In a pioneer bid to activate tourism to Egypt, the Egyptian Cultural Center in Paris succeeded in attracting hundreds of thousands of French fans of art to the Arab calligraphy exhibits created by the late Egyptian artist , Sayyed Ibrahim, the famous Arab calligrapher.
Hani Helal the Egyptian cultural advisor in Paris said that the mentioned exhibition was set up in the framework of the program performed under the title of "The Egyptian Ramadan Nights" being organized by the center. The entertaining program included miscellaneous artistic and cultural meetings and debates.
Helal said the French enthusiasm for visiting the calligraphy exhibition was due to the beauty and accuracy that characterized the genius of S. Ibrahim. After its astounding success it was decided to shift it to the Arab World Institute in Paris so as to give more chance to interested French and Arab people to have a look at the pretty-designed Arab calligraphy.
The masterpieces exhibited comprised more than forty works of genuine art. Some of those innovations date back to about half a century where verses of the Holy Qur'an, Arabic poetry lines and proverbs were written in various types of magnificent Arab calligraphy.
Artist Sayyed Ibrahim was born in Cairo in 1897 and got his studies in Al-Azhar mosque and the National University. He worked as a teacher in the Egyptian schools since 1918. He also went to teach Arabic calligraphy at Cairo University, American University in Cairo and Arab League Institute for Calligraphy.
Of his achievements were: writing the headlines of the Egyptian newspapers (Al-Ahram, Al-Mussawar, Al-Balagh and Al-Helal). He was also assigned by Moslems in India to decorate the Gama Mosque there with artistic portraits.
Recently, the International Committee of History, Arts and Heritage at Istanbul, Turkey, decided to name the world contest performed in 2000 under the name of " Artist Sayyed Ibrahim."
