Moroccan-French summit talks in Rabat
Morocco-France, Politics, 12/3/2001
Morocco's King Mohammed VI, accompanied by his brother Prince Moulay Rachid, held in Rabat Sunday summit talks with French President Jacques Chirac, who visited Morocco December 1-2 part of a tour that already led him to Tunisia and Algeria.
King Mohammed VI and President Chirac surveyed all aspects of bilateral cooperation and lauded the Moroccan-French partnership, the royal office said in a release.
They also conferred on the latest developments of the crisis that broke out after the attacks of September 11. They shared their respective assessments on the dramatic consequences of the logic of confrontation that seems to gain ground in the Middle-East.
Morocco and France also share the same will as to the need to fight international terrorism and eradicate its roots and causes.
King Mohammed VI renewed, in this connection, Morocco's standpoint calling for political solutions appropriate to conflicts, to frustrations and to social and economic unbalance which have marred for a long time the stability and the wellbeing of peoples and states, especially in the Middle-East.
King Mohammed VI and President Chirac rejected any reference to a clash of civilizations and cultures and stressed joint will to promote international relations based on dialogue, mutual respect and the acceptance of the other.
While deploring the daily deterioration of the situation between Palestinians and Israelis, King Mohammed VI renewed the need to establish as soon as possible a sovereign Palestinian state with Al-Quds as its capital based on the resolutions of the U.N. Security Council.
King Mohammed VI and President Chirac recalled their shared will to see Palestinians and Israelis resume negotiations without preconditions and the soonest possible. They lauded the recent U.S. statements calling for the creation of a Palestinian state.
King Mohammed VI and President Chirac also stressed the need to give a new impetus to Euro-Mediterranean partnership and highlighted the responsibility that all partner countries share to guarantee the security and the respect of Arab and Muslim communities based in Europe.
Chirac left Morocco Sunday at the end of the visit.
